Single parents are entitled to child alimony from the other parent. Child alimony is a payment with your own child to the parent with whom the child has legal residence.

Parents can decide the arrangement of the alimony payments between them or through the Social Security Administration. Parents are obligated to support their child until 18 years of age at least, and 20 years of age if a child is in school.

The Social Security Administration handles paying alimony after a ruling from the District Commissioner, if alimony payments are not received from the parent that should pay the alimony.

It is unauthorised to agree upon a lower amount than the minimum alimony. In case of a dispute regarding alimony payments go to the District Commissioner(www.syslumenn.is).

Information on alimony and alimony payments are on the Social Security Administration's website (www.tr.is).
